On April 9th, Brian Dorsey was executed by the state of Missouri at approximately 6:11 PM CST. We remember Sarah and Ben Bonnie and, we mourn the loss of Brian Dorsey and acknowledge the new victims the state created through this execution.
Brian's final statement read: "Words cannot hold the just weight of my guilt and shame. I still love you. I never wanted to hurt anyone. I am sorry I hurt them and you. To my family, friends, and all of those that tried to prevent this, I love you; I am grateful for you.
In the afternoon, Brian's family delivered over 2000 more signatures and made a powerful statement outside Governor Parson's office. Over 75 people stood outside ERDCC to bear witness to the heinous act of state violence. Hundreds of others gathered in solidarity throughout Missouri to respond to systemic violence in our society and to hold space for all co-victims of the death penalty.
Brian is now the 98th person murdered by the state of Missouri since 1986. There are currently 11 people living under death sentences in Missouri. Many of them are at the end of appeals.
Missouri needs a response to violent crime that does not perpetuate cycles of violence. We must emphasize addressing the root causes of crime as we seek true restoration and healing for victims and our communities. Until then, we will continue to stand with those who face this barbaric and unjust punishment.
Thank you for standing with us and being a part of the movement to abolish the death penalty in Missouri.
Another story where revenge and self righteousness prevailed over fairness and justice. Disastrous.
