Last week two pending death penalty cases in the City of St. Louis under the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office and Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner were handed over to the United States Attorney’s Office which indicted Phillip Cutler and Cornelius Green on murder-for-hire charges.
Both men have been transferred into federal custody and appointed attorneys to represent them.
While nothing was officially put in writing by the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office, we are happy to see these cases paused at the state level, leaving the City of St. Louis with zero pending capital cases currently on its plate.
We are hopeful that this signals a return to the days where death was not an option for the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office and that Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner will join the movement and lend her voice publicly to the growing number of progressive prosecutors removing death as a sentencing option in their jurisdictions.
