Pending death penalty cases have dramatically declined in Missouri, with only 13 cases active as of January 2024. New death sentences are also rare; in the last decade, there has only been one unanimous jury decision resulting in a death sentence. The last person sentenced to death was Darren Emery in St. Charles County.
