Sister Helen Prejean spoke out on Twitter this week after an autopsy was released from Virginia’s most recent execution.
Prejean’s tweets come in the wake of another execution in Virginia. William Morva, 35, was pronounced dead at 9:16 p.m. after lethal injection on Thursday. Morva was on death row for killing a hospital security guard and a sheriff’s deputy after escaping from custody in 2006. He had been awaiting trial on attempted robbery charges when he was taken to the hospital for treatment of a minor injury, as NPR reports. Many news outlets have reported that, according to expert testimony, Morva suffered from delusional disorder.Morva’s execution reignites the problem of the death penalty’s brutality. International calls urged Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe to spare Morva’s life, including the daughter of the slain sheriff’s deputy.
